From a lot of years Alois Lageder protect this vine variety. In Magrè, where our family set up in 1934, by buying the Löwengang estate, it is possible to find the best conditions for the cultivation of Merlot.
With the others “French cousins” coming from Bordeaux, this variety has been planted in Alto Adige for more than 120 years. For the wine making, Lageder uses 100% Merlot grapes, coming from selected vineyards in Magrè and Ora. The elevation of these zones swings between 230-320 meters. The soils are full of sand, stones and limestone. The vines are between 13-58 years old. The harvest is in September, followed immediately by fermentation, maceration and malolactic fermentation in steel. Then starts the aging, that instead, is managed in wooden barrels and concrete baths.
Features of the red wine Merlot produced by Alois Lageder
The organoleptic aspect of this wine reveals a clear, deep cherry red. The scent is quite aromatic with hints of wild berries, fruits and spices. The taste is structured, spicy, fruity, juicy. Its evolution is completed in the bottle where this wine can rest for 2 to 5 years.
