Particular and rare wine of uncertain origin, Riesling on sale in our online wine shop is a quality white wine that, when grown and produced in Oltrepò Lombardo and especially in the province of Pavia, takes on a characteristic dry, fresh, pleasant, harmonious and elegant taste. Particularly appreciated among the wines of Lombardy, the Riesling produced in this region is often confused with the Rhine, with which, in reality, it shares only the name but has no kinship.
Compared to the grape of German origin, in particular, the Italic one, despite the denomination, it has no certain origin: although there are those who attribute it kinship with the Greco di Tufo, The Lombard Riesling is more probably native to the Champagne region, while other research believe that it comes from Germany or Hungary. The most credited hypothesis is that the Italic vine, despite the name, is of French origin, and from here on has landed in Germany and in many other countries of central Europe. Its name in German is Welschriesling, where the prefix "Welsch-", literally "of Latin origin", can be extensively interpreted as "Italian" but also "French", to emphasize the difference with the original one, the Rhine.
Oltrepò can boast the national record of cultivation of the vine: Italian Riesling is, in fact, one of the most popular varieties in the area. It is cultivated a little everywhere, even if the greatest concentrations are found in the middle-hill area of the central eastern belt (Valle Versa, Valle Scuropasso, Mornico Losana, Oliva Gessi, Montalto Pavese). Of medium vigour, with good and constant productions, it prefers dry climates and not too humid and possibly hilly soils that allow to avoid late ripening and a rapid evolution of acids, often responsible for the production of musts poor in acidity.
It adapts to the different forms of breeding and pruning provided not too expanded and rich. The bud has an expanded apex, whitish-green, velvety, with explained apical, whitish, and cottony leaflets. The adult leaf is medium, whole or trilobed. The upper page is light green, smooth, hairless, the lower one greyish-green. The bunch is medium or small, cylindrical, often winged. The berry is medium, spheroid with a yellow skin more or less charged depending on the humidity of the soil and sun exposure. The texture is good and the flesh is juicy, sweet and simple.
Classified among the most prestigious Italian white wines, the visual examination of the Riesling shows a straw yellow color, with greenish reflections accentuated by observation in natural light. Particularly appreciated also among the vini del Trentino Alto Adige, on the olfactory examination the Riesling highlights the characteristic and pleasant scent that recalls the apple, fruity, with notes of quince and apricot. In the young versions are frequent slight mineral scents. The palate reveals a fresh and dry taste, pleasant, round and dry, with medium body and slightly bitter aftertaste.
It goes well with dishes of the Padana culture, pasta and meat broths but also with vegetable tarts, mushroom risotto, fillet of perch with white wine, preparations of salami and goose ham, risotto alla certosina, soup alla pavese.
