Carignano
Carignano del Sulcis is one of the most representative wines of Sardinia for its unique personality and unmistakable taste that makes it appreciated all over the world. The homonymous black grape variety from which it is produced has origins in the Mediterranean area, where it initially spread to Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia and only later reached Italy, where its cultivation found fertile soil until it reached Sardinia.
Some studies have hypothesized the autochthonous origins but other theories lead it to the Spanish domination through which this vine would have been imported in our Peninsula, not by chance that the homonymous grape still in recent times has often been defined "Axina de Spagna". But it was the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians, two thousand years earlier, who elected Sulcis as a reference place for their influence in Sardinia, impressed by its strategic position overlooking the sea: in this territory, located in the south-western part of the island, probably also devoted themselves to the first cultivation of black berried grapes, which, according to recent archaeological discoveries, were identified as Carignan grapes.
