Already known to the Etruscans, Sangiovese finds fertile ground for production in the areas of their domains of central Italy, not surprisingly its name is often referred to as Blood of Jupiter, with which this people pointed him around the seventh century BC to thank the gods for having granted such a gift of the earth. According to other myths it was the Romans who used the same name in reference to a wine produced in the area of Monte Giove, near the Rubicone, while sources dating back to the sixteenth century use similar words to indicate a type of high quality named by Giovan Vittorio Soderini in his Treatise on the cultivation of vines around 1590.
The first law to protect the vine was introduced in 1716, when the Grand Duke Cosimo II Dè Medici issued the regulations governing its production in Chianti, Carmignano, Pomino and Valdarno.
