Morellino di Scansano is a Tuscan red wine which boasts the certification of DOCG. Its production is allowed only in a portion of the province of Grosseto in Tuscany, a land of great wine tradition, Italian excellence of reference for the world market. The Morellino di Scansano Wine, in 1978 was recognized at national level with the DOC certification that then, from 2006 with a special ministerial decree was promoted to the higher level of DOCG.
Geographically the “Morellino di Scansano DOCG” was born in one of the most pristine areas of Tuscany. The southernmost coastal part of the region, known as Maremma Toscana, enclosed between the valleys of the river Ombrone and the river Albegna, and including, in addition to the territory of the municipality of Scansano, part of the municipalities of Grosseto and Magliano in Tuscany towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, Campagnatico, Roccalbegna, Semproniano and Manciano towards Monte Amiata and the interior of the hilly territory.
Specifically the wine is almost completely made from Sangiovese, locally known as Morellino, which then, depending on the wineries producing vines blended in the blend with other local grapes, autochthonous and in percentages always lower than 15%. It owes its peculiarities and characteristics to the soil conditions and the local microclimate. In fact, the vineyards suffer from the beneficial influence of sea breezes, which attenuate, especially in summer, high daytime temperatures.
The ampelographic basis of this fantastic wine with Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin “Morellino di Scansano” must be obtained from grapes from vineyards composed and produced within the company, within the geographical area defined by the production disciplinary, the following varieties: Sangiovese, present for at least 85%. Other non-aromatic black grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany Region up to a maximum of 15%, can also contribute to the production of Morellino di Scansano.
Even viticulture, thanks to the high value of wine, must according to the specification comply with precise rules. Firstly, the planting density of vineyards intended for the production of wines with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin which must not be less than 4,000 vines per hectare. In addition, the maximum yield of grapes allowed in vineyards for the production of wines of Morellino di Scansano DOCG” which must not exceed 9 tons per hectare and with a yield per vine not exceeding 3 kg. The maximum yield of the grapes in finished wine should not be higher than 70%.
Other rules concern vinification and aging. In this case, the grapes destined for vinification must ensure the wine “Morellino di Scansano DOCG” and the other admitted type “Morellino di Scansano Riserva & rdquo; a minimum natural alcoholic volume of 12 volumes. The wine with a controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin “Morellino di Scansano”, if it is to be qualified with the term Riserva, must undergo a period of aging not less than two years, of which at least one in wooden casks. The period of aging begins on the 1st of January following the year of production of the grapes. Moreover, the denomination Riserva must guarantee some essential characteristics of the wine, listed below: ruby red color, tending to garnet with aging. Brilliant clarity. Smell, fragrant, ethereal, intense, pleasant, fine. Taste: dry, warm, slightly tannic. Total alcoholic strength by volume at least 13 volumes. Minimum total acidity of 4.50 g/l.

According to some agrarian scholars, the name Morellino derives from the nickname given to a local clone of Sangiovese that gives very small berries. According to the regulations, Morellino di Scansano is produced with at least 85% Sangiovese grapes (Morellino clone, while the remaining 15% must be chosen in "recommended" varieties for this area, such as Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, Malvasia. Morellino is usually produced using stainless steel tanks, while Morellino di Scansano Riserva is aged for a minimum of two years. Of these two years, at least one year must be in wooden barrels.

Serving temperature and recommended glass
The Morellino di Scansano DOCG should be tasted at 18°C, uncorking the bottle at least an hour before. The recommended glass must be large and capacious in order to encourage the expansion of olfactory scents.
