Col d'Orcia

The Col D'Orcia winery is located on the southern side of the Municipality of Montalcino, in a hilly area and extends for 140 hectares, from the river Orcia to the village of S. Angelo in Colle, about 450 meters. altitude. The location is definitely happy for the perfect exposure to noon, for protection from the cold and against the occurrence of weather events of particular intensity, such as hail or storm clouds, constituted by the barrier of Mount Amiata (1750 mt.) and finally for the influence exerted on the climate by the Tyrrhenian Sea which is about 35 km as the crow flies. The nature of the soil is decidedly favourable to the cultivation of vines, with basically loose soils, poor in clay and rich in limestone and skeleton. The area is not affected by fog, frost or late frost, while the frequent presence of wind ensures the best conditions for the health status of the vine. The climate is typically Mediterranean with limited rainfall concentrated in March, April, November and December. The high number of sunny days during the entire vegetative phase ensures a gradual and complete maturation of the bunches. The southern exposure of the vineyards and the particular nature of the soil give structure and elegance to Brunello produced on this side of Montalcino. The cellar, where all the complex phases of vinification take place, has been created in the original rooms of the farm, has a capacity of 8,400 hectoliters of thermoregulated steel tanks. While the aging cellar built in 1990, perfectly inserted in the green of the Mediterranean vegetation, contains oak barrels of Slavonia and Allier capacity 25-50-75-150 hectolitres for a total of 7000 hectolitres and n equal 800 barriques for a total of 1800 hectolitres.
