CASTELGIOCONDO
South-west of Montalcino, Tenuta Castelgiocondo is located at an altitude of about 300 meters, an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese. The ideal altitude, the excellent sun exposure and the draining soils enhance the wines of Castelgiocondo that stand out for their power and extraordinary longevity. The village of Castelgiocondo dominates the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which began, in 1800, the production of Brunello di Montalcino and the historical importance is evidenced by the figure of the knight reported on the labels of wines of Castelgiocondo, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of the troops of Siena, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw, at the same time as the knight’s deeds, the Frescobaldi begin their centuries-old adventure in the world of wine.
