Another spectacular wine of the San guido estate is the younger brother of the Sassicaia, this fantastic and refined wine “Guidalberto” honored by the IGT certification which guarantees the Indication of Geographic Tipicity. This wine is produced with a blend of 60% cabernet Sauvignon and a 40% of Merlot which expresses all its refinement, character and great structure. The grapes are cultivated on soils which have different morphologic characteristics sensible to the weather conditions. There is a strong presence of calcareous zones rich of marl and rocks and partially clay; they are all located at 100-300 meters with an optimal exposition at South-west and south. The cultivation method is the cordon spur which permits a density of maximum 6250 trees per hectare. The grape harvest is manual and starts from the last week of August for the Merlot grapes and from the first week of September for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The harvest of the Guidalberto grapes ends around the 20th of September with no interruptions. The wine making process starts with the pressing and the destemming of the grapes. The fermentation in stainless steel tanks takes place under temperature control at 30°-31°C without the addition of any yeasts. The maceration on peels lasts 9-10 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon and 12-14 days for the Merlot with following pumping over. The malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel and before the aging the blend is unified. After the malolactic fermentation takes place the aging for 15 months in French oak barrels and in little portion is American. Finally there is the bottling and it takes place the aging in glass before being commercialized.
Characteristics of the red wine Guidoalberto from Tuscany
With the aim of respecting the refinement, the prestigious and the elevate quality of the wines produced by the Tuscany estate San Guido, also the red Guidalberto, as the Sassicaia, is described by the Gambero Rosso “Vini d’Italia” guide which describes it as a very drinkable wine, pleasant and charming. It offers a concentrate nose, of black fruit and balsamic hints. It is sublime.
Historical background of the Guidoalberto wine of the Tenuta San Guido
It born by Merlot grapes. The intuition came from Mr. Mario Incisa, creator of the Sassicaia which was inspired by his great-uncle Leopoldo Incisa della Rocchetta. Nicolò, his son, manager of the Tenuta San Guido for forty years, took the intuition by Guidalberto della Gherardesca his great-great-great grandfather. This last one lived in the beginning of 1800 in the Bolgherese and he was a pioneer of the modern agriculture, and he was the one who planted the famous “Viale dei Cipressi”. So Nicolò Incisa, to honor the innovative spirit of the grandfather dedicate this modern innovation by giving his name. For him the born of this wine has three motivations; firstly the will to use a variety never used before in the winery which is the Merlot. Then the possibility for the consumer to have a young wine and finally the possibility of the selection of the grapes addressed to the Sassicaia.
